The project will see black granite stones being repaired or relayed and minor repairs to paving on the ramps.

The work will take til around the end of March 2022, weather dependent, but the city council says it won’t need to close down the area as work will be done in phases.

Coun Tracey Rawlins, executive member for environment, said: “Exchange Square is one of the most used and well-regarded spaces in the city centre but it definitely is in need of a bit of care and attention.

“We’re hoping to keep disruption to a minimum as these works take place, but hope we can rely on the public’s understanding during their duration.”

It comes as work continues on the more extensive overhaul of another city square, Albert Square.
