Major roadworks to alter Deansgate will start on Monday, the council has said.

Manchester City Council announced early last month the city centre thoroughfare would undergo sweeping changes, with new measures like segregated bike lanes, a new bus gate on Whitworth Street West, and ‘better junctions to allow cyclists safe transit’. The changes mean a permanent one-way system will be in place for motorists, so drivers can only travel southbound from Quay Street to Liverpool Road. The work is expected to last until Spring next year.

The bus lane at the top of Deansgate, near St Mary’s Gate, will remain in place — as will the black-and-white cycling bollards. The ‘wand orcas’, as they’re officially called, will also be extended towards Liverpool Road.

Councillor Tracey Rawlins, executive member for environment and transport, believes ‘benefits’ in other parts of the city can be replicated on the thoroughfare. She said: “For several years we have made great strides in improving the transport links in our city centre.

“Walking, wheeling and cycling have become key pillars in our overall transport strategy through schemes like this one in Deansgate, we aim to embed that ethos even more across our city centre. In other places throughout Manchester we’ve already seen the benefits of improving infrastructure in this way and I am confident we will see that replicated on Deansgate in the coming months.”

The council has issued a reminder to say roadworks will start on Monday (August 5), at the junctions of Deansgate/Quay Street/Peter Street; Deansgate/Whitworth Street West; and Chester Road/Great Jackson Street. Night-time road closures will be in place from 7pm to 4am at the junctions of Quay Street and Liverpool Road from Tuesday (August 6) to Friday (August 9).
