Police in Tameside have given an update on their investigation into an incident where a child was abducted and sexually assaulted in Droylsden.

Officers say the six-year-old girl was taken from the Warne Avenue and Hawthorn Road area around 4.10pm on Wednesday (18 August), down a path towards a nearby football field, where she was assaulted by an unknown man who appeared to be lurking around the area.

He then made off towards the Snipe estate, towards Openshaw, and the little girl managed to return to her family.

GMP said on Thursday morning that a man had been arrested but he has since been released with no further action.

And on Friday morning, GMP then confirmed a 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of abduction and sexual assault and is in custody for questioning.

They have asked the public to keep coming forward with information.

Supt Richard Hunt said they believe the attack to be an ‘isolated incident’ and have increased patrols in the area.

He also advised parents to be vigilant, adding: “We are confident that this an isolated incident, there’s nothing to suggest that this is a repeated behaviour or pattern.”
