Charley Gadd: police say search continues for student missing in Manchester for almost a month

Twenty-year-old Charley has not been seen since he went missing on a night out in Manchester in December.

Greater Manchester police say they are continuing the search for missing student Charley Gadd remains ‘ongoing’ - almost a month after his disappearance.

The 20-year-old vanished after a night out in Manchester on Saturday 11 December and his family issued an urgent appeal for help in tracing his whereabouts.

Police and fire service officers have previously carried out searches on the River Irwell last month, and a GMP spokesman said on Thursday (6 January) that enquiries were ongoing, with no new updates to share.

What were the circumstances of Charley’s disappearance?

Charley was last spotted around 1.15am on Saturday 11 December 2021, outside the Royal Exchange Theatre, where he was heading towards St Annes Street in the city centre.

He had had a night out at the Warehouse Project with his father but his dad said Charley suddenly ‘ran off’ close to the Spar Store in St Mary’s Gate.

His dad Jolyon Gadd says they spent hours looking for him and reported him missing to the police after they failed to find him.

As Charley is from near Sudbury in Suffolk, he does not know Manchester very well and his parents issued an urgent appeal for help in tracing him a few weeks ago.

Charley’s father, Jolyon, said: “Charley is a very bright, warm, funny and loving man who everybody hugely enjoys being around.

“He is in the second year of a film and media degree course at the University of Essex in Colchester where he is well liked and flat shares with friends.

“We have heard nothing from him since he ran off and my wife and I and his brothers Bruno and Rufus are desperate for any news of him. We are obviously extremely worried.”

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen Charley or has any information.

He is described as white, thin and 5ft 9 in tall, with mousy brown hair. He wore a red jacket and blue jeans when he went missing.
