Police and family members issued appeals for the whereabouts of Charley, who was from Sudbury in Suffolk and did not know the area well.

However, just after 11.30am on Monday (10 January 2022), GMP officers were called to a report of a body found in Manchester Ship Canal.

Police said the body has not yet been formally identified, but it is thought to be Charley. There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances and a report is being prepared for HM Coroner.

His family are being supported by specialist officers at this difficult time, a force spokesman added.

What were the circumstances of Charley’s disappearance?

Charley was last spotted around 1.15am on Saturday 11 December 2021, outside the Royal Exchange Theatre, where he was heading towards St Annes Street in the city centre.

He had enjoyed a night out at the Warehouse Project with his father but his dad said Charley suddenly ‘ran off’ close to the Spar Store in St Mary’s Gate.

His dad Jolyon Gadd said they spent hours looking for him and reported him missing to the police after they failed to find him, sparking an extensive search to locate him.
