It’s hugely popular event in the sporting calendar - and it’s going to be broadcast live from the BBC studios in Salford once more.
BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022 will take place on Wednesday 21 December with Gary Lineker, Clare Balding, Gabby Logan and Alex Scott presenting the evening programme live from MediaCityUK again like in 2021.
The popular programme, which celebrates sporting heroes from the previous 12 months, is now in its 69th year and will look back on a busy year in the sporting calendar.
Who is nominated for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022?
The BBC is yet to announce the shortlist but there are plenty of highlights and sportspeople who are likely to make an appearance.
Over the last year, we’ve seen England’s Lionesses bring football home in Euro 202; a record number of medals for the Home Nations at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Ronnie O’Sullivan take his seventh World Snooker Championship, Manchester City winning a nailbiting Premier League title chase, with Liverpool taking both the EFL Cup and FA Cup, and Matt Fitzpatrick win the US Open.
And that’s all before the World Cup takes place in Qatar!
What are the categories in Sports Personality of the Year?
The categories for 2022 will include: BBC Sports Personality of the Year, World Sport Star of the Year, Helen Rollason award, Young Sports Personality of the Year, Unsung Hero, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year and the Lifetime Achievement award.
Viewers can nominate their own Unsung Hero too for volunteers who make a positive impact in their community by enabling participation in grassroots sports: see the BBC website here before 30 October.
BBC director of sport, Barbara Slater, says: “The BBC is the home of major sporting events and has brought key moments from a huge year to audiences across the UK. We will be truly spoiled for choice for contenders and can’t wait to celebrate the year’s achievements in December.”
