Train drivers' union ASLEF is to embark on a fresh round of strike action.

As with the last set of strikes in December, the days when members at different train companies strike will be staggered. This means Manchester will be affected on some days more than others.

The strikes are part of the union’s ongoing fight for better wages and working conditions on the railway. They have claimed that they have not had a pay rise since 2019, and members will strike on January 30 and 31 and then February 2, 3 and 5.

According to the strike schedule, services in and out of Manchester will be worst affected on January 31 as Northern and TransPennine Express drivers will be on strike. Both train operators have said to expect significant disruption on this day.

Other days on which Manchester stations will be affected by the strike action include February 3, when Avanti West Coast drivers will be taking industrial action. February 5 will see CrossCountry services to and from Manchester stations impacted due to the action.

Tuesday February 6 will be the last day of disruption on the rails, bot not due to train strikes. An overtime ban will restrict some services across the network, and you should check National Rail for the latest updates and to plan a trip.

ASLEF General Secretary Mick Whelan said: "We have given the government every opportunity to come to the table but it is now a year since we had any contact from the Department for Transport. It's clear they do not want to resolve this dispute. Many members have now not had a single penny increase in pay for half a decade, during which time inflation has soared and, with it, the cost of living. We didn't ask for an increase during the pandemic, when we worked through lockdown, as key workers, risking our lives, to move goods around the country and enable NHS and other workers to get to work."
