Nine Greater Manchester buildings have been shortlisted for this year’s Royal Institute of British Architects awards – dominating the North West's 13 buildings in total.
The shortlist of projects includes a mix of innovative new designs and historic buildings that have been given a new lease of life. All the buildings will now be visited by a regional judge and the winners will be announced in spring. Winners will then qualify for other RIBA awards, including the Sustainability Award and the coveted Building of the Year.

RIBA North West Jury Chair Katy Marks, Founder of Citizens Design Bureau, said: “This year’s shortlist reflects growing ambition to build a Northern Powerhouse. It’s also particularly heartening to see an investment in designing high-quality learning and healthcare environments, which deliver on social and economic benefits for future generations.
“From the reinvention of a 200-year-old cotton mill into a residential community, to the sensitive retrofit of an iconic music hall which laid abandoned for years, these projects are underpinned by a desire to restore and celebrate the industrial character of the North and deliver buildings which enhance people’s lives.”
