When most people think of Manchester, they think of its bustling city life. But we've got to stop you right there, as beyond the Metrolink and the Northern Quarter bars, Greater Manchester has some of the finest countryside around.
In under 45 minutes by car from the city centre, you can find rolling hills, picturesque walking routes and quaint villages. As we enter 2024 we've rounded up some of our favourite villages that you've got to visit over the next 12 months.
1. Worsley

2. Uppermill

3. Haigh
Haigh in Wigan recently ranked among the poshest places to live, according to research by estate agents Savills, published by the Daily Telegraph. Pictured is Haigh Hall, a 19th century stately home.
4. Holcombe
Holcombe in Bury, is located on Holcombe Moor, a National Trust site. Visitors can walk up to the Peel Tower (pictured) on Holcombe Hill for a stunning view of the surrounding countryside. Credit: Google Maps
