Manchester is great over the festive period. There are loads of Christmas events taking place, mince pies are back on supermarket shelves and the markets are in full swing.
But sometimes what you really need is a change of scenery, and luckily Manchester is surrounded by some great spots to wile away a few hours.
From natural beauty spots to coastal towns, and historic castles to metropolitan centres, here are eight of our favourite winter day trips.
1. Chester
This historic town is known for its Roman past and Tudor-style architecture. Its Christmas markets are open now until 21 December.
2. Bakewell
The capital of the Peak District, this quaint town famous for its eponymous tart is perfect for a wandering around or stopping off at on the way to nearby tourist attractions like Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall.
3. Hebden Bridge
This bohemian West Yorkshire market town is known for its arts and culture scene. It is also surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Calder Valley and nearby Hardcastle Crags.
4. Clitheroe
This town in the Ribble Valley, famous for its Norman castle, is a great winter day out, especially if you’re visiting on a weekend in December as you might catch the Christmas markets. (Photo: Shaun's Wildlife Photography via Wikimedia)
