Manchester is great over the festive period. There are loads of Christmas events taking place, mince pies are back on supermarket shelves and the markets are in full swing.
But sometimes what you really need is a change of scenery, and luckily Manchester is surrounded by some great spots to wile away a few hours.
From natural beauty spots to coastal towns, and historic castles to metropolitan centres, here are eight of our favourite winter day trips.

6. Jodrell Bank
This world famous observatory located in Cheshire is a must-see for science fans. Even if you’re not interest in stars, the site has several events planned for December, including an immersive show to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon and Winter Solstice celebrations. | Getty Images

7. Liverpool
It’s always interesting to see what other cities look like over the festive period and Liverpool will not disappoint. Wander around the markets at St George's Hall (picture) or take in some culture at one of the many museums and galleries. | St George's Hall
