Why Manchester has 'probably the best beer scene anywhere in the UK' according to brewers

International Beer Day is something we can certainly get behind in Manchester.

And here at Manchester World we’ve been out and about celebrating the great independent breweries that make the scene in the city so diverse. That Manchester is the go-to place is hammered home by the amount of breweries from further afield deciding to make this place their home from home.

“It’s the history of brewing here, it’s got such a good heritage.” says Matt Lloyd, duty manager at Fierce Beer, an Aberdeen brewery that has set up shop on Thomas Street in the Northern Quarter.

Denny Rogers, general manager at Pelican on Dale Street - recently taken over by Cumbria’s Fell Brewery - goes even further. “It’s probably the best beer scene of anywhere in the UK,” he tells us. “Some of the best breweries, brilliant brew taps, there’s us from Cumbria, Northern Monk from Leeds and Fierce from Aberdeen wanting to set up down here.”

On our trip round the corner to Northern Monk on Tariff Street, Liam Jones points to one of the real strengths of the beer scene in Manchester. “Craft beer has never been about us versus them, it’s very collaborative,” he says.
