Thirteen senior Manchester United players returned to training over the weekend as the club stepped up its preparations ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Several members of the squad had returned last week, including the likes of Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Jadon Sancho, all of whom were involved in the 2-0 friendly victory over Leeds United on Wednesday. Summer signing Mason Mount also featured and trained last week at Carrington with his new team-mates.

But on Saturday, a number of other first-team stars were back at the club’s training ground, with those players who featured in June’s international fixtures pictured on their first day of pre-season training. Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro, Scott McTominay, Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes, Facundo Pellistri, Anthony Elanga, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford were all seen back at Carrington, along with a number of youth-team players.

Unsurprisingly, the first session back wasn’t too strenuous for the squad, with a few fitness tests followed by an extensive warm-up. The United players were also pictured taking part in some running drills and keep-ball sessions.

Despite the plethora of returnees over the weekend, none are expected to be involved when the Red Devils take on Lyon in Edinburgh on Wednesday. United face the French side at Murrayfield, but Ten Hag revealed after the victory over Leeds that the game would come too quick for the late arrivals.

After the Lyon encounter, the United squad jet to America for their pre-season tour, with matches against Arsenal, Wrexham, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
