Tens of thousands of crimes were recorded in Tameside over the last year, official police records reveal.

Tens of thousands of crimes were recorded in Tameside over the last year, official police records reveal.

Greater Manchester Police recorded 26,830 offences in Tameside in the 12 months to March, according to the Office for National Statistics.

At 118.1 crimes per 1,000 people, that was far higher than the rate across England and Wales, which stood at 89.3.

This is only the second time Greater Manchester Police have been able to supply data at community safety partnership level since its implementation of a new IT system in July 2019 – meaning no comparison to the year before is possible.

Crimes recorded in Tameside included:

Of the crimes recorded in the area over the last 12 months, 807 were sexual offences – an increase of 43% from the year before.

Meanwhile, violent crime has soared in the area, from 8,457 to 11,172 over this period.

One of the main factors behind this increase was the rise in violence without injury, which rose by 37%, from 3,074 incidents to 4,208.

And theft offences rose by 20%, with 6,249 incidents recorded in the 12 months to March.

At 27.5 crimes per 1,000 people, that was slightly higher than the rate across England and Wales, which stood at 25.1.
