What’s on in Manchester this weekend: fun things to do between 3rd and 5th December

From Friday 3 December, the free 10-day Lightwaves festival is set to return to Salford Quays. Visitors will get the chance to explore a trail of illuminated installations that animate and transform the surroundings.

With a focus on bold new commissions, Lightwaves supports international artists alongside local and emerging talent. This year’s installations come with messages of protecting the planet and building a sustainable future.

    Not So Secret Grotto

    A corner of a town centre in Trafford has been transformed into a winter wonderland. The Not So Secret Grotto has arrived in the Stamford Quarter of Altrincham town centre transforming the area into a cosy and magical festive destination.


    The Not So Secret Grotto is now set to host everything from children’s craft workshops to festive choirs. The space has been given a festive makeover with twinkling fairy lights, lanterns, cosy blankets and lots of Christmas trees.

    Frost Fair

    For those of you who are ready to dust of those dancing shoes, this next event is right up your street on Saturday and Sunday. The Whitworth will be taking over the grounds with the return of The Frost Fair, with the largest outdoor dancefloor in the City,

    The theme for this year’s event is reflection and celebration, reflecting on the challenges of the past year and celebrating being back together. At the core of the weekender is art and togetherness.

    Coca Cola Truck


    The iconic Coca-Cola Christmas truck has become a popular part of the festive season. And it has now been confirmed that holidays are coming to Manchester as the bright red vehicle prepares to roll up at The Trafford Centre this weekend from Friday to Sunday.

    Residents will have the chance to see the truck and take some photos of it when it arrives. This year, the tour is part of Coca-Cola’s Real Magic campaign sending out the message of joy and inclusion at Christmas time.
