Manchester’s Vue cinema at the Printworks will be one of the just 30 theatres worldwide and three in the UK to screen Oppenheimer on 70mm IMAX.

The latest film from director Christopher Nolan (Dark Knight, Inception) is one of the most anticipated films of the year. It features a stacked cast, led by Peaky Blinders’ Cillian Murphy, alongside Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Gary Oldman and Florence Pugh.

Oppenheimer is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book American Prometheus and tells the story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his work on the atomic bomb during World War II. While this may have been one of history’s most significant scientific advancement, it brought devastation to the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of the war in 1945, the only time nuclear weapons have been used in war.

The exclusive 70mm IMAX screenings will allow viewers to watch the film in the highest resolution possible. The Vue Printworks is the only cinema in the UK outside of London to offer this.

Reviews for the film are yet to land, but in a recent interview with Wired, Nolan himself described the upcoming picture as an “intense experience” and “kind of a horror film.” We also know that the film will switch between colour and black-and-white, and is the first film shot on 70mm IMAX to do so.

But this special 70mm screening is not the only cinephiles will be looking forward to on 21 July. The film shares a release date with the other highly anticipated summer film, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie starring Margot Robbie in the title role and Ryan Gosling as Ken.
