In pictures: the artist whose quirky portraits of life on Canal Street are on display in Manchester

Many of the paintings by Mike Roberts capture life on the city’s famous Canal Street.

The quirky paintings of a northern artist, many of them depicting life in Manchester, are on display at an exhibition in the city.

Mike Roberts’ talent with a brush is being celebrated at Cass Art on Oldham Street until 13 February.

Some 30 paintings are on display, showcasing Mike’s blend of flamboyance and nostalgia.

Many of the works depict life on Manchester’s famous Canal Street while another favourite subject is his imaginary character Silvia whose flamboyant and outgoing everyday life is celebrated on canvas.

Mike, who is from Timperley, also has on display a series of Edward Lear illustrations which have been accepted in the library of The Edward Lear Society in London.

The exhibition is on in the basement of Cass Art and entry is free.
