Here's everything you need to know about The Great Manchester Run this weekend

On the 18th of May, The Great Manchester Run will return and this year there will be the most people in 10 years running! Here’s your guide to everything.

How many exactly?

There will be 35,000 participants this year and this includes runners in the 10k and half marathon events. Over 100,00 spectators are expected to also be in attendance. Additionally at 08:15, the first wave for the half-marathon will begin.

The Route

Both the 12 and 10k start on Portland Street near Oxford Street and finishes on Deansgate. The 10k route heads southwest, past Old Trafford and Salford Quays, and then returns to Deansgate. The half-marathon route includes a 7-mile detour, heading east to the Etihad Stadium and then rejoining the 10k route for the final stretch.

There will be a significant number of road closures and extensive bus diversions in place on race day. If you are taking a bus check if you will be impacted by these major closures.

The 10K goes more around Salford and the city centre, while the half marathon route stretches goes to the east of the city and also passes the important landmarks seen in the 10k.

Tram will be the best choice for travel on race day. There are many stops located close to spectating points along the race route. Make sure to stay updated with the Bee Network webpage for more and to check their spectating route.

Spectating spots

Deansgate Interchange and Stretford Mall are great spectating spots as runners will pass here twice. Otherwise, Sale and Altrincham offer opportunities to support the runners. If you want to stay away from large crowds, leave out Deansgate and the city centre.

There will be food and drink options for both runners and spectators on the day. Showing your medal can give you deals and offers in some places. There is a Gaucho's Great Manchester Run Steak deal, and bars like Home Sweet Home will be offering free drinks. Check The Great Manchester Run website for all your pre-fueling and post-run energy needs.
