The Davis Cup is often referred to as the World Cup of Tennis. Nations from around the world compete in gruelling week-long battles on the court to see who will be crowned as champions.

In September, the famous tennis tournament comes to Manchester’s AO Arena. Four nations- including Great Britain- will be playing each other across six days of high quality action from September 12 to 17.

Across the week, Great Britain will be up against Australia, Switzerland and France. All games will take place at the AO Arena and each will be played across five days.

History of The Davis Cup

The first ever Davis Cup took place back in 1900 between the USA and Great Britain (playing under the name British Isles) in Boston. The USA won comfortably 3-0, and the tournament was up and running.

By 1905, the tournament had expanded to also include France, Austria, Belgium and a combined team including players from Australia and New Zealand. For the 1969 tournament, 50 nations were included.

One of the next big changes to The Davis Cup came about in 1981 when World Groups were introduced. This is where four nations compete over a week of tennis.
