'Brilliant' free exhibition train opens in Bury tomorrow after major success in the North West

An exhibition inside a train packed with interactive fun and amazing stories opens in Bury tomorrow.

More than 60,000 people have visited Inspiration, the free exhibition train on a 60-stop, year-long tour of Britain, and it's been described as “brilliant”, “fun” and “educational”.

Richard Jones visited with his nephews in Llandudno and described it as “fantastic”. He added: “There were so many exciting activities – we all loved it!”

Inspiration is curated by the National Railway Museum and Railway 200, the campaign celebrating 200 years of the modern railway.

It reveals how railways, a British invention, changed the world, and is free to visit. Visitors can expect historic artefacts, hands-on engineering challenges and a whistle-stop tour of interesting – and lesser-known – careers on the railways.

Inspiration visits the East Lancashire Railway in Bury from Wednesday 21 until Saturday 24 January. On 20 January there were still a few tickets left.

Inspiration’s North West leg has been highly popular, with more than 5,000 people flocking to fully booked stops in Southport and Crewe.

Emma Roberts, Programme Manager for Railway 200, said: “Railways are one of history’s most important inventions and inside this train you can explore the story of rail in a fun and family-friendly environment.

“Inspiration has already travelled thousands of miles across Britain – from Scotland to Southampton – and we are hugely excited to welcome locals aboard at the East Lancashire Railway.”

East Lancashire Railway Chairman Mike Kelly said: “The modern era of the railway owes much to generations of railway workers, engineers, and designers, reaching all the way back to Locomotion No. 1 in 1825. Those early pioneers and the many who followed are rightly celebrated through the creation of Inspiration.

“We are incredibly honoured to be chosen to host this special celebration, marking 200 years of railway development — particularly here in the North West — and recognising the dedication of our staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to preserve our transport heritage.”
