Free Your Mind: Danny Boyle’s hip-hop stage version of The Matrix coming to Manchester - how to get tickets

Combining the hit franchise with dance and hip-hop, Free Your Mind will act as Factory International’s opening production.

Hit film franchise The Matrix is coming to the stage in Manchester as a hip-hop performance show at Factory International, titled ‘Free Your Mind’.

Directed by Slumdog Millionaire and 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle, the reimagining of the action series, itself a retelling of Alice in Wonderland, will feature hundreds of dancers and performers.

According to Variety, the show is “Combining the hip-hop choreography of hundreds of dancers with the latest immersive design, Free Your Mind will take audiences on a thrilling journey through The Matrix and into a new realm of possibilities

    “This eye-opening production will stretch across the building’s ultra-flexible spaces, responding to them and harnessing the collective energy of the moment.”

    The Matrix is coming to the stage as Free Your Mind directed by Danny Boyle.

    This is not the first time director Danny Boyle takes on a live performance, having directed the 2012 London Olympics Games opening ceremony, which included some 7,500 volunteers and performers including Daniel Craig and late Queen Elizabeth II performing a James Bond-skit.

    Talking about the project, Boyle said: “You know what it’s like, especially at the moment, you think: what the f*** is going on? This is a project where we try to address that … through dance, really. That’s not giving too much away but it does reveal some of the ambition of it.”

    When is Free Your Mind on at Factory International Manchester?

    The world’s first dance adaptation of The Matrix will be premiering at Factory International in Manchester on October 13, 2023 and will be running until November 5, 2023 as the venue’s official opening production.

    Who is involved in Free Your Mind Matrix remake?

    In addition to director Danny Boyle, the Warner Bros-licensed project will feature music from Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante and choreography from Kenrick ‘H2O’ Sandy.

    General sale starts at 10am on Thursday, October 6  with pricing starting at £10.
