Thousands are expected to fly from Manchester to Switzerland next week - here's why

Generally, Switzerland is known for it’s winter tourism with stunning alps and Christmas markets. However, over the next few months, more than 80,000 people are expected to fly from Manchester Airport to the country.

This is due to the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday 17 May and the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 between the 2 and 27 July, where England will be looking to defend their crown.

The host cities for these events can be reached directly via Manchester Airport. So, if you’re planning on going you might want to stay in or visit some of these places during your trip.

Basel - Near the borders of Germany and France, Basel is the host city for Eurovision and will also be the venue for the Euro 2025 final, as well as three group games and a quarter final. The city’s medieval Old Town and 12th Century Gothic cathedral are its major tourist draws. You can fly direct from Manchester with EasyJet

Geneva - will be hosting a semi-final and a quarter-final as well as three group games at Euro 2025. Here there is the UN’s headquarters, Musée d’Art et d’Histoire and Lake Geneva. You are also able to fly directly with EasyJet.

Zurich - The largest city in Switzerland and another host of a semi-final, a quarter-final and three group games, including two England games. It is famous for its galleries and museums. Swiss Airlines and EasyJet both link Manchester to Zurich with direct flights.

Bern - Foodies will love this city with it’s array of chocolate treats, due to it being the birthplaces of chocolatier Theodor Tobler, creator of the Toblerone. You can also check out the Bear Park, a green space in the heart of the city.
