How did the news break?

The news of Ricky Hatton’s return to the ring was broken on Hatton’s personal Twitter page.

"I can confirm my return to the ring," Hatton wrote on his Twitter page shortly before 7am today (21 April).

He added: "Join me for a huge party night - with top music acts - in Manchester on July 2. It’s not how you fall, it’s how you rise..."

Information about tickets and when the fight will happen was also shared on the page of the former light welterweight world champion.

When is the fight taking place?

Ricky Hatton has announced he will come out of retirement for an exhibition match later this year.

Hatton will take on Mexican fighter Marco Antonio Barrera, who is 48, across eight rounds.

The fight is due to take place at Manchester Arena on 2 July.

His opponent Barerra last fought in 2011 and lost to another British fighter Amir Khan in 2009.

What are the records of the two fighters?

The two fighters have been out of the ring for over a decade, but their records when fighting made them two of the hottest names in the sport for several years.

Hatton finished his career with a record of 45 wins and just three defeats, whilst Barerra won 67 of his 74 bouts.

44 of these victories were by knockout.

Although neither boxer has fought in a decade, their records speak for themselves.

Barrera stands at 5ft 6” and has a reach of 178cm.

Hatton is slightly taller at 5ft 71/2” and has a reach of 165cm.

Following the announcement of the fight, Hatton shared ticket information on his Twitter page, and included a link to an official website for the fight.

Who else is fighting?

The undercard for the Hatton v Barrera fight has been announced, with a further two fights taking place.

These bouts are due to be Dan Hardy v Diego Sanchez and Casey Walsh v Don Strapzy.

Who is Marco Antionio Barrera?

Hatton’s opponent for the fight is 48 and was born in Mexico City on 17 January 1974.

Barrera, nicknamed ‘Baby Faced Assassin’ made his boxing debut in 1989 and had a career which lasted 22 years before his retirement in 2011.

Barrera is well known for his trilogy of fights with fellow Mexican Érik Morales, his two dueles with Manny Pacquiao (who defeated Ricky Hatton in 2009) and his rivalry with Naseem Hamed and Juan Manuel Márquez.

In 2017, Barrera was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
