The Super League season culminates with the Grand Final on Saturday between Wigan Warriors and Hull KR at Old Trafford.

Two very different sides will enter the arena this weekend with Wigan no strangers to the rugby league showpiece while Hull KR will be looking to be the first team to win on their Grand Final debut for more than two decades.

When is the Super League Grand Final taking place?

The game kicks-off on Saturday night, October 12, at 6pm. More than 65,000 people are expected at the game which will make it the biggest crowd since more than 72,000 went to the Grand Final in 2017. The event has been held at Manchester United’s stadium every year since 1998, except during the Covid-19 pandemic, when the final was held in Hull. And a deal was announced on Monday to continue playing the Grand Final at Old Trafford until 2027.

What’s the story of the Super League season so far?

Reigning champions Wigan Warriors are aiming to become the first team to win all four trophies in one season. Matt Peet’s side beat Leigh Leopards 38-0 in the semi-final at the Brick Community Stadium after winning the league phase by winning 22 of 27 matches. They have already won the League Leaders’ Shield, Challenge Cup, and World Club Challenge this season. Peet, a proud Wiganer said: “We've discussed it and this week is about the process really - the players are aware of it - we'll just talk about how we can improve as a team.”

Underdogs Hull KR are hoping to be the first team to win on their Grand Final debut for more than two decades. Willie Peters’ side edged past Warrington Wolves 10-8 in a nail-biting semi-final at Sewell Group Craven Park having finished second in the league stage after winning 21 matches.

The Aussie said: “Whoever turns up and plays the best on the day will get the result. We've shown we can match it with Wigan. There's a mutual respect there. Whoever turns up on the day and settles the quickest they'll win the game.”

Key players

On Tuesday night Hull KR’s Mikey Lewis was named the Man of Steel, a prize given to the best player that season. He followed in the footsteps of Wigan Warriors’ Bevan French who won the award last season. Both players will be front-runners for Saturday’s player of the match award. Previously known as the Harry Sunderland award, this is the first year since it was renamed as the Rob Burrow award, in honour of the Leeds Rhinos star who died earlier this year from motor neurone disease.

Wigan’s captain Liam Farrell missed the semi-final with illness and remains a doubt for Saturday. Hull KR’s Oliver Gildart is available. He won two Grand Finals during his prior stint with Wigan.
