Zirkzee false nine and CDM signs - Manchester United might have new big game tactic - gallery

Man Utd are working to sign Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna in the summer transfer window.

If it wasn't for Manchester United's heroic performance in the FA Cup Final, Erik ten Hag might not be in a job right now.

Instead, he is gearing up for his third season in charge of the club and will be under more scrutiny than ever before to deliver improved performances and results.

For that famous win over Man City back in May, Ten Hag accepted United's best hopes of victory would come by playing on the break, even if his long-term ambition is for them to be able to match elite opponents stride for stride.

It remains to be seen whether or not United will ever be able to control matches quite like Pep Guardiola's side do, or whether they will be able to subdue opponents into submission in the same way either.

United are targeting summer signings who can help bring them closer to achieving that goal, but the arrival of Joshua Zirkzee could also help them in those bigger matches, when there is less emphasis on possession and more focus on utilising their blistering pace on the beak.

Here is a look at how United could line up next season in matches when Zirkzee is utilised as a false nine rather than Bruno Fernandes.
