It was a night to forget for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Manchester United as they began their Champions League campaign with a defeat in Switzerland.

The Red Devils lost 2-1 to Young Boys, with Cristiano Ronaldo finding the back of the net early on, but goals from Moumi Ngamaleu and Theoson Siebatcheu meant it was the host who took three points from the early kick-off.

Here’s the match ratings from a difficult night for United.

David de Gea- 6

Made a good save to deny Christian Fassnacht in the first half and could do nothing to stop either goals. Despite the Young Boys’ dominance, De Gea actually had few saves of note to make.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka- 3

A night to forget for the full-back, who had started the game poorly before being sent off in the 35th minute for an over-the-top challenge on Christopher Martins. The dismissal changed the game and put United on the back foot.

Victor Lindelof- 5

Was called into action a lot in the second period and produced a few good interceptions and stops. The centre-back, who was a surprise selection for the game, looked gutted at the full-time whistle.

Harry Maguire- 6

Was impressive in the first half and looked good on the ball prior to the red card. Maguire put in plenty of tackles and challenges as the game progressed and he marshalled the defence well.

Luke Shaw- 6

Faced two tough customers in right winger Christian Fassnacht and right-back Silvan Hefti, with the latter repeatedly bombing forward. Shaw, like many of United’s players, wasn’t quite at his usual level on the ball in Switzerland.

Donny van de Beek- 6

The decision to take him off at half-time was more due to tactics than his performance, although the former Ajax man didn’t do much to stamp his authority on a rare start. Van de Beek was tidy on the ball in the centre of the park without ever creating any real chances of note.

Fred- 6

Was asked to cover a lot of ground, especially in the second half when he played alongside Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in the centre. The Brazilian managed to intercept plenty of opposition passes but could do little to stem Young Boys’ flow. Fred had a bit more assistance once Nemanja Matic was introduced late on.

Jadon Sancho- 5

Hauled off after Wan-Bissaka’s red card, the England international had some nice moments of skill in the first half, but struggled to impose himself on the game. Sancho gave the ball away on several occasions and will need to be less wasteful in possession going forward.

Bruno Fernandes- 6

Played a magnificent ball for United’s goal in the first period and was lively in the opening exchanges, however, the No.18 struggled with Young Boys’ pace and movement after the break. He couldn’t offer enough protection for the United defence and was taken off with 20 minutes remaining.

Paul Pogba-5

Like Fernandes, Pogba showed he just doesn’t have the defensive instinct to carry out the role he was asked to after Wan-Bissaka’s red card. The midfielder showed plenty of spirit and endeavour and produced some nice touches in the early proceedings.

Cristiano Ronaldo- 5

Did what Ronaldo does best after 13 minutes when his excellent movement and finishing put United ahead. But the 36-year-old was a liability after the red card and his lack of energy and pressing really restricted Solskjaer’s side.

Diogo Dalot- 5

Most of Young Boys’ attacks came through the middle or right flank, so Dalot was the least worked of the back five in the second half. The wing-back struggled to advance and offer passing options higher up the pitch.

Raphael Varane- 6

The summer signing went through a 20-minute spell where he seemed to get his head or foot to every cross, but Ngamaleu just edged in front of him to score.

Jesse Lingard- 5

Was introduced with 20 minutes remaining and showed lots of energy without seeing much of the ball. But it was his misplaced pass that cost United in the latter stages and presented Theoson Siebatcheu with a clear-cut chance.

Nemanja Matic- 6

Helped the Red Devils’ rearguard and took up some excellent positions to block Young Boys passes. However, the experienced midfielder does struggle against high-energy opposition, as was shown on Tuesday.
