Yann Sommer has already given verdict on his future amid Man Utd transfer links

Manchester United are rumoured to be looking for a new goalkeeper to compete with David de Gea, according to reports.

Manchester United fell to a second consecutive league defeat on Saturday, with a 4-0 drubbing from Brentford.

The Red Devils looked to have forgotten anything new boss Erik ten Hag had taught them in pre-season with a display which fans will not want to remember.

David De Gea was at fault for the first two goals, leading to criticism from fans and pundits for his performance, while the rest of the team also failed to impress.

The Spaniard spilled Josh Dasilva’s shot just 10 minutes into the game before his misplaced pass to Christian Eriksen was intercepted by Mathia Jensen, who slotted the ball into De Gea’s goal.

Now it seems Erik ten Hag has decided he wants to recruit another goalkeeper to compete with the Spaniard at Old Trafford with Blick reporting the Red Devils are interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach’s Yann Sommer.

The newspaper claims that ‘internal discussions’ have taken place regarding a move for the 33-year-old becoming United’s no.2.

They add that Sommer, whose contract runs until the summer of 2023, also has an option to extend his current deal with Gladbach for a further two years.

However, despite the rumours of a move to Old Trafford, the shot-stopper’s recent comment surrounding his future may suggest he could remain at the German club.

Speaking recently to Bild, the Switzerland international said: “I am currently having very open talks with the club. I admit that it took me a lot of time to process the past season and to think about everything that happened.

“Everyone was dissatisfied, there was a lot of criticism. And now, of course, there [are] a lot of rumours."

The need for another goalkeeper at the Red Devils is up for debate given they have Tom Heaton on the books.

He is no stranger to being first choice between the sticks having played as Aston Villa and Burnley’s no.1 in the past.

However, there’s also the argument of not enough depth in the position given Ten Hag agreed to loan Dean Henderson to Nottingham Forest for the season, leading to just two senior goalkeepers at Old Trafford.
