Speculation as to where Frenkie de Jong will be playing football next season continues to circulate.
The Dutchman has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, while Premier League rivals Chelsea are also said to be interested in his signature.

It’s no secret that the Red Devils are in need of a holding-midfielder, with De Jong believed to be their ideal candidate for the role.
However, United’s pursuit for the 25-year-old doesn’t seem to be getting any closer, leading to reports he would rather stay at the Camp Nou than move to Old Trafford.

Speaking in his latest press conference, Barcelona manager Xavi has sent mixed messages regarding De Jong’s future at the club and has hinted that he could sell the Dutchman in order to remain within the financial fair play requirements.
“I’m not here to send messages. I already spoke with Frenkie. I value him very much,” Xavi said.
“He’s a key player, but there is also the economic situation and financial fair play.

“He can bring us a lot as a central defender. I like him in this position."

It’s interesting to note that Xavi has suggested if De Jong does remain at Barcelona next campaign, he could play the Dutchman at centre-back, despite him being one of the best-performing midfielders last season.

This could lead to the 25-year-old, who stands five foot 10, wanting to depart the club in order to play in his favoured central-midfield, something the Red Devils are likely to provide.
Barcelona’s current financial situation could also provide a boost for United, with the Catalan club signing several players and in need of offloading names to balance the books.
De Jong featured 47 times in all competitions for the La Liga side last campaign, scoring four goals and providing five assists.

He is no stranger to United boss Erik ten Hag having worked with him at Ajax, where they won the Eredivisie and Dutch Cup in 2019.
