Who is Alvaro Fernandez? The Spanish Manchester United youth prospect spotted in training

Manchester United have one of the most world-renowned youth academies, with recent graduates such as Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, Anthony Elanga and Dean Henderson now part of the first-team set up.

The Red Devils have several prospects in their youth ranks who have sealed loan moves to other clubs in order to further their development and experience senior football.

One name who was rumoured to be following in this path is Alvaro Fernandez. The left-back had interest during the January transfer window from a number of clubs according to reports.

As per journalist Simon Peach, there were teams in the Championship looking at the possibility of signing the 18-year-old on loan for the remainder of the season.

However, he added at the time it looked as if the Spaniard would remain at Old Trafford, which with the window now closed, he did.

Fernandez has been a pivotal part of United’s academy sides this season, making 23 appearances so far.

Who is Alvaro Fernandez?

Born in Seville on March 23 2003, Fernandez is a Spain Under-19s international with two caps to his name.

The 18-year-old began his career with Racing de Ferrol, before spending time with Deportivo de La Coruna and Real Madrid at youth level, eventually ending up with The Red Devils in 2020.

Current form

The defender has scored three goals and assisted his team-mates on four occasions in all competitions for United’s Under-23 team this campaign.

Though predominantly a left-back, he can also operate on the right side of defence and as a centre-back.

What the future holds

Fernandez was pictured in first-team training on Tuesday, which could indicate the Spaniard will be involved in future matchday squads under Ralf Rangnick.

The club’s official website describes the 18-year-old as a ‘defender who looks extremely comfortable in possession’ - something that bodes well for potential game-time in the senior team.
