When Ruben Amorim will manage Manchester United for the first time as Ruud van Nistelrooy set to stay longer

Man Utd have reached an agreement to hire Sporting boss Ruben Amorim as their new head coach.

Manchester United fans will have to wait a little while before they get to see Ruben Amorim take charge of their team for the very first time.

It is understood United have finally reached an agreement with Sporting Lisbon over the pursuit of their head coach, which will see Amorim take charge of three more matches before he leaves for Old Trafford.

The 39-year-old would like to have a smooth exit from his current club, who made it clear they would waive his 30-day notice period as long as he can remain with them until the upcoming international break. It means Amorim will take charge against Estrela on Friday, Man City next Tuesday, with his final match against Braga a week on Sunday.

Amorim would then begin work at United during the November international break and work alongside those players who have not been called up by their countries. It means his first game in charge would be against Ipswich Town on 24 November.

United have signalled their intention to pay the €10million release clause to appoint Amorim and are willing to pay and additional €1m in order for him to start during the international break, rather than serve his notice period. It has been reported Sporting are holding out for an extra €5m instead. A further compensation package also needs to be agreed for the backroom staff Amorim wishes to bring to Old Trafford with him.

All of this means interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to have a four-game tenure in charge of his former club, with a home triple header against Chelsea, PAOK and Leicester City to come.

Speaking after victory over Leicester City on Wednesday night, Van Nistelrooy revealed he would be open to staying at the club under their new head coach. “I came here as an assistant to help the club. Now in this role, I’m helping as long as needed. In the future in any capacity, I’m here to help the club further to build towards the future that’s what I'm here for."
