Scott McTominay has admitted Manchester United squads have been ‘toxic’ in the past but has claimed the current group fully back Erik ten Hag.

Reports last week had suggested the United boss has fallen out with as much as 50 percent of the first-team group, which earned four journalists bans for the midweek press conference against Chelsea. United won that game, with Ten Hag afterwards pointing to the unity in his squad ahead the home meeting with Bournemouth, a match the Red Devils lost 3-0.

McTominay, a veteran of the Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer eras, has seen this all before. He was asked ahead of the Champions League game against Bayern Munich how much responsibility the players take for United's inconsistent results this season, and said this squad is more united that previous iterations.

“It’s the players responsibility, first and foremost,” he replied. “Players know that as well. We’ve had many amazing players over that time and now we’re at the stage where we have big characters in the dressing room.

“It’s not like other managers where it’s been a little toxic at times. The boys are firmly behind the manager, that’s the be all and end all, I’ve said that many times in interviews and that’s the way it will remain to stay.

“We have amazing coaching staff as well,” he continued. “Things can get lost in translation and people can get carried away with what the players think and say behind closed doors. We just want to do well for the football club and it’s as simple as that.”

The midfielder could have left Old Trafford last summer with interest from West Ham United. But McTominay remained and at the Red Devils and is now the club's top scorer in all competitions this season.

“There is always speculation and different things surrounding every player at Man United,” the Scotland international reflected. “You have to perform to stay at this club, I’ve known that since I’ve been a young boy watching lots of senior pros come through and academy player as well. For myself, it was a case of just get your head down and work and there’s not really much else to say other than that.”
