Hide AdUnited were deservedly thumped 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, after goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke secured the three points for the away side.
Erik ten Hag's side were already a goal down when they also went a man down before half-time, as club captain Fernandes was given a straight red card by referee Chris Kavanagh for his lunge on Maddison.
The Portuguese playmaker had slipped on the ground before he extended his leg and made contact with the Tottenham star, in what was a harsh sending off, but one that was never likely to be overturned by VAR.

Hide AdSpeaking after the match, Fernandes insisted he should never have been sent off and even claimed Maddison thought it was an unfair decision.
"Nobody wants to be sent off, it’s not a good feeling," he told Sky Sports. "I didn't go with the studs, it’s never a red card. Even James Maddison when he gets up he said it’s not a red card.
"If this is a red card we have to look at many other incidents. It is a foul, there is not much contact, if he [the referee] wants to give me a yellow I agree. I don’t understand why VAR doesn’t call him to the screen."
