What every opposing manager has said about Manchester United and Erik ten Hag this season

Man Utd have experienced a tough start to the new season but there has been sympathy for Erik ten Hag.

Erik ten Hag is still under huge pressure at Manchester United despite the fact it is 'business as normal' ahead of their return to action next week.

United's poor start to the new Premier League season as well as Ten Hag's position were both believed to have been discussed at the latest monthly executive committee in London this week, with no decision communicated by the club. They would only normally release a statement on the meeting if an extraordinary outcome was made, such as the sacking of a manager, and would be unlikely to comment on the managerial situation when nothing has actually changed.

While it seems like the Dutchman is set to remain in his position for now, there can be no ignoring the desperate need for improvement given United have won only three of their 11 games this season, are 14th in the Premier League table and have failed to score in four of their past five Premier League matches.

Here is what opposing managers have said about United and Ten Hag so far this season:

Manchester United 1-0 Fulham (Marco Silva)

"After 20 minutes good reaction from Man Utd. We adjusted at half-time and the second half was much better in my opinion. We had our chances. When you play against Manchester United... there were moments and we had to punish them.

"We had so many moments and we were punished at the end of the game. It was a crazy game and we did not play our own game. It was an emotional game, we tried to rush many, many times. We did not get the points I thought we deserved."

Brighton 2-1 Manchester United (Fabian Hurzeler)

"It was very emotional. It always is when you get the win in the last minute. I think we deserved to win - we had a good game, not a perfect game. There were also situations where Manchester United had the chance to win the game.

"I think the first half was equal and then in the second half we started to control the game quite well. We had a lot of chances, especially in the second half. For me, their goal was from out of nowhere. Then I didn't like losing the control. Then, after their offside goal, I think we started to control the game again. In the end, I think we deserved to win."

Manchester United 0-3 Liverpool (Arne Slot)

"Last season, they were man-marking on the midfield, and they had a press with the seven and 11 (the wingers). So with the striker, and one of the wingers jumped with him.

"This season, they are more with a 9 and 10 press, so they're more in a 4-4-2. So that's different, of course. I see them, in my opinion, working harder if the ball is being played through them, so they run more. That's at least what I saw in their first games.

Their style is also - this is maybe last season, I don’t remember that well - but their full-backs, nine out of ten times, are really high, and then Casemiro comes in between. So, if you pick up the ball and you can keep Diaz and Mo Salah high, then you're constantly in a one-on-one situation. Then you need midfielders that can run, and we had three of them today that kept running, and if they arrive in a duel, they are aggressive enough to win it. So that was, I think, one of the main reasons why we could win today."

Southampton 0-3 Manchester United (Russell Martin)

"We conceded two terrible goals from set plays. It's the only thing I'm really angry about today. The lads are trying so hard. They're giving everything they've got.

"It's a different game (after the penalty). You get to half-time and we can maybe re-energise the players a bit. In the second half, both teams were wrestling. They had some good moments. They've got some top players. We had a lot of guys at the top end of the pitch that were tired."

Manchester United 7-0 Barnsley (Darrell Clarke)

"Listen, they’re a quality team but we’re very disappointed in our performance. We haven’t done ourselves justice - that was my fear tonight coming here. A lot of my players had an off day. Probably one player, Mael [de Gevigney] probably comes out of the game with credit. But not an acceptable performance from us. I know it’s a big occasion against a very, very good team, I get that. They turn it on against Premier League teams but it’s a huge wake up call for me to the players to understand what it takes to be a top, top, top player.

“If I ever hear one of my players tell me Premier League players when they’re watching a game and they’re saying they’re poor, I’ll be giving them a slap because they’re miles off, we were miles off against a team that can absolutely destroy you when you’re not at it.”

Crystal Palace 0-0 Manchester United (Oliver Glasner)

“Even when they [Manchester United] lost 3-0 against Liverpool, the xG was almost the same. They have a lot of quality in their offence, with their wingers, brilliant in 1v1, with players from the midfield always scoring. Now it was [Joshua] Zirkzee or [Marcus] Rashford who played in the EFL Cup, so a very, very good offence.

“But also you can see that if you defend well, you will get your chances because they play very offensive football and have clear structures, so that speaks for their manager [Erik ten Hag]."

Manchester United 1-1 FC Twente (Joseph Oosting)

"If you wait too much, they are skilled at football and create opportunities. If you put them under high pressure, you can also force them to make mistakes and ultimately that is also further away from the goal. Then it's about coordination and courage. Not just courage on the ball, but also courage in defence."

Manchester United 0-3 Tottenham Hotspur (Ange Postecoglou)

"I thought it was an outstanding performance. We started the game well, scored a great goal and probably should have had two or three [more early goals]. The pressure then overwhelms them and they get the red card. After that I thought we controlled the game well. Just an outstanding effort from all the lads."

Porto 3-3 Manchester United (Vítor Bruno)

"I've heard a lot of people saying that he [Ten Hag] was coming with a rope around his neck, but it would be a huge mistake [to underestimate United]. We are talking about world-class players. If you tell a different story, it doesn't relate to the truth. Any club has problems, but we have to be on our toes and very alert.

"We are talking about amazing, exciting players. Maybe they are not having their best moment, but we have to know where the danger is coming from and have the right state of mind."

Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester United (Unai Emery)

“I have a lot of respect for him.. We won the first match when I arrived here and it was fantastic, but after it we’ve lost four matches against them at home and away. They are a winning team, they have an experienced coach and experienced players. The club is usually a winning club and they still being winners – they won the FA Cup last year against Manchester City.

“They are not getting consistently good results in the Premier League, but playing only one match, they can exploit their capacity and skill with a huge performance. I respect them and I will prepare the match more than how I prepared the match against Bayern Munich. Manchester United aren’t in the Champions League now they are playing in the Europa League, but they are a team with a quality players and coach, like teams we are facing in the Champions League."
