Manchester United announced they had reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of Casemiro on Friday.

The Red Devils are believed to be signing the Brazilian midfielder on a four-year deal for an initial £60m with an extra £10m in add-ons.

Casemiro, who has been on Madrid’s books since 2013, will be revealed as United’s latest addition before their match against Liverpool on Monday evening, according to reports.

The 30-year-old will become Erik ten Hag’s fourth summer signing, joining Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia as fresh faces at Old Trafford.

Casemiro is regarded as one of the world’s best midfielders and has helped Real win 13 trophies during his tenure with the Spanish giants, including five Champions League triumphs.

However, despite the midfielder’s impressive CV, Red Devils legend Peter Schmeichel isn’t convinced his former club have signed the right player, instead implying they should’ve targeted someone with Premier League experience.

“I’m surprised that this player is being mentioned at that amount of money and on those wages, at that age, when we don’t know if he can do the job,” the Dane told BBC Sport.

“Maybe sign someone who we know can play in the Premier League for now, and then next season look at someone like Casemiro next year, who is also an exciting player to watch.”

The move for the Brazilian came as a surprise for many supporters, especially with United’s summer-long pursuit for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.

However, a player with the calibre of Casemiro is exactly what the Red Devils have been missing for several years and one that could help turn their poor start to the campaign around.

United sit 19th in the table before their clash with Liverpool on Monday after losing both their opening games to Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion, in which Ten Hag’s side have conceded a total of six goals.

The club have also failed to find the back of the net so far this season with their only goal coming via an own goal by Alexis Mac Allister.

Once Casemiro’s visa requirements have been resolved he is expected to be available for the Red Devils’ match against Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.
