Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney believes Erik ten Hag is getting the job done at Old Trafford after Wednesday night's FA Cup fifth round win over Nottingham Forest. The Red Devils left it late to book their place in the quarter-finals, with Casemiro heading in from close range less than a minute before the clock struck 90.

It wasn't a pretty performance from United, although they were defensively solid for the most part, much like their hosts. Casemiro came up with the big moment, although there was some controversy surrounding the goal, with a lengthy VAR review taking place due to Raphael Varane seemingly blocking a runner from an offside position in a similar way to Liverpool's disallowed goal in the Carabao Cup final.

Be that as it may, the goal stood and United progressed to the quarter-finals, where they will face Liverpool at home, and club legend Rooney believes it was a valuable victory for the Red Devils. "It is a massive victory, and not the best of games. Both sides missed good chances but that's a big win for Manchester United," he told BBC Sport.

"You want big players to have big moments and Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro combined at the end. A lot is made about Erik ten Hag's position but he has been doing OK. We are starting to see more consistency and I think he will get time. United lose one game and it's a crisis - I've seen that, I've been there. But tonight was a good win and a good reaction from the Fulham game."

United now turn attention to a huge Premier League clash with rivals Manchester City on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium.
