Tottenham Hotspurs’ players have vowed to ‘put things right’ when they face Manchester United on Thursday.

Spurs were humiliated on Sunday when they lost 6-1 to Newcastle United at St James’ Park, with the London club going 5-0 down after just 21 minutes. It follows an awful recent run of results that have seen Tottenham lose to Bournemouth and draw with an Everton side that played with 10 men for 30 minutes.

The Newcastle debacle was the final straw for interim manager Christian Stellini, who was sacked on Monday after four games in charge since the previous dismissal of Antonio Conte. The team’s poor run has allowed United to pull clear in the race for the top four, with the Red Devils six points ahead of Tottenham, having played two games fewer.

But the Spurs players have vowed to atone for Sunday when United head to the capital for the midweek Premier League contest, and have also offered to reimburse any Tottenham fan who made the journey to Newcastle on Sunday.

"As a squad, we understand your frustration, your anger," read a statement from Tottenham’s players. “It wasn’t good enough. We know words aren’t enough in situations like this but a defeat like this hurts."

"We appreciate your support, home and away, and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans with the cost of their match tickets from St James’ Park. We know this does not change what happened on Sunday and we will give everything to put things right against Manchester United on Thursday evening when, again, your support will mean everything to us. Together - and only together - can we move things forward.”

Meanwhile, chairman Daniel Levy also released a statement in which he stated the players would ‘pull together’ for the final matches of the campaign.

“Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable,” he said, via Tottenham’s website. “It was devastating to see. We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the Board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine.

“I met with the Player Committee today - the squad is determined to pull together to ensure the strongest possible finish to the season. We are all clear we need to deliver performances which earn your amazing support.”
