Man Utd did not sign a striker in the January transfer window despite the best wishes of Ruben Amorim.

Manchester United did not sign a striker in the January transfer window, but they could still technically add one to their squad in the coming days. Ruben Amorim had prioritised the addition of a new forward to his squad and played Kobbie Mainoo as a false nine in the weekend defeat to Crystal Palace in what felt like his clearest dig yet at the United board.

United now technically only have four senior forwards available to them for the remainder of the campaign, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee the only two recognised strikers. It means United might be forced into giving youngsters Chido Obi-Martin and Gabriele Biancheri playing time before the end of the season, though they could yet add to their ranks.

Although they have missed the deadline to sign players, United could still add free agents to their squad to replace Marcus Rashford after he joined Aston Villa on loan.

United could still sign free agent strikers

What is so alarming is the lack of options available to United even if they explored the free agent market. There are no compelling wildcard additions to the squad, so it really would be a last resort for Amorim if he wants to simply add another option to his first team squad.

The most notable name is former Chelsea star Diego Costa who has been without a club since he was released by Gremio last month. The 36-year-old had plenty of Premier League experience doesn't look well suited to the style of play at Old Trafford. It is almost the identical situation for former Chelsea forward Willian who is also without a club since he left Olympiacos last year. At the age of 36, he could fill a space until the end of the season at the very least.

United's other options would be little-known Italian striker Andrea Compagno, who was most recently at Tianjin Jinmen Tiger Football Club, and former Valencia forward Maxi Gomez. It would certainly be desperation if any of them signed.
