Newly promoted Saints are yet to win following their promotion from the Championship and following the international break, they host United at St Mary’s. Ahead of the game, boss Russell Martin has warned changes were “inevitable”.

Martin said: “It’s such a difficult position because I feel fiercely loyal to the same players who helped us to get to the Premier League and I’ve been in that position. I have to balance that loyalty and what they did last season with what some are actually doing now and the place they’re in right now.

“Also, with the level of talent that’s come into the building, they need a bit of time to adapt, but we’ve brought in some really brilliant players. It’s about trying to get that right for them to come into the team.

“I think now it’s inevitable that changes will be made and people will have opportunities that they need to take.”

Ex-Burnley forward Cornet could feature against United. Martin added: “He has scored goals at this level in a breakthrough season but had injury issues at West Ham. He is a really good footballer so if we can keep him fit, he really suits what we want to do.”

Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag has revealed the latest team and injury news ahead of Manchester United’s trip to face Southampton on the south coast on Saturday lunchtime.

The United boss has revealed Leny Yoro, Mason Mount and Tyrell Malacia are out of the trip, with the Premier League returning after the international break. Meanwhile, Victor Lindelof has a toe injury. Ten Hag has suggested that summer signing Manuel Ugarte could make his debut against Southampton. It was also confirmed that Luke Shaw (calf) and Rasmus Hojlund (hamstring) miss out again.
