Lisandro Martinez has thanked Manchester United fans for their support and vowed to return to the pitch soon following the news he’ll miss at least eight weeks with a knee injury.

The defender picked up the problem in the second half of Sunday’s 3-0 win over West Ham United and, after trying to play off, had to be replaced by Raphael Varane. Erik ten Hag described the injury as a ‘personal disaster’ after the game, with Martinez not expected back until April.

After the news was announced on Monday, the 26-year-old posted on social media: “I want to give a heartfelt thanks for the great support I've received and to reassure you that I'll soon be back out there, and we'll fight together. Always united!”

Previously the club said via a statement: “Lisandro Martinez has sustained an injury to the medial collateral ligament in his knee and is expected to be out of action for at least 8 weeks.

“The Argentine defender left the field in the 71st minute of our 3-0 win over West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday. We all wish Licha a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch later in the season.”

The injury comes as a real blow for Martinez, who has missed 18 games this season due to the recurrence of foot injury that required surgery. The World Cup winner has played just 10 games as a result of the four-month layoff and the West Ham game was only his second league start after returning.
