“He was surrounded by his family. His family would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him. We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time."

United described Charlton as ‘one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club’. “Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world,” the club added.

“He was admired as much for his sportsmanship and integrity as he was for his outstanding qualities as a footballer; Sir Bobby will always be remembered as a giant of the game.”

United have laid a wreath by the Holy Trinity statue on the Old Trafford forecourt, which depicts Charlton and former team-mates George Best and Denis Law, while fans have added floral tributes to the 1966 World Cup winner.

United’s players will wear black armbands in Saturday night’s game against Sheffield United, and the pre-planned minute of silence ahead of the match will be expanded to include Charlton.

The club will also open a book of condolence for fans and the public from 10am on Sunday, in the International Suite at Old Trafford. An online version will also be made available for fans who cannot make it to the stadium, and is available here.

United are still making arrangements for how they will mark Charlton’s passing at their next home game, which comes against Copenhagen on Tuesday night in the Champions League.
