Manchester United have sent their condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson following the announcement that his wife, Lady Cathy, has passed away.

In a statement released to PA, the Ferguson family announced the sad news on Friday. "We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing yesterday of Lady Cathy Ferguson, survived by her husband, three sons, two sisters, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild,” the statement read. “The family asks for privacy at this time.”

In a statement, United said: “Everyone at Manchester United sends our heartfelt condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family on the passing of Lady Cathy.

“Lady Cathy was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a tower of strength for Sir Alex throughout his career.”

The couple married in 1966 and Lady Cathy was a constant source of support to the former United manager during his 26-year spell at Old Trafford, as well as his previous roles in Scotland.
