Erik ten Hag has revealed that Sergio Reguilon was replaced due to illness in the latter stages of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Burnley.

The defender, making just his third appearance for Manchester United since he completed a deadline-day loan move from Tottenham Hotspur, came off after 79 minutes, having previously received on-field treatment.

However, speaking after the match, Ten Hag revealed that Reguilon’s withdrawal was not due to an injury. “He was ill tonight and you see the reliance that he wanted to play, and you see the spirit in the team,” said the United boss.

Reguilon played a significant role in a well-organised United defensive showing at Turf Moor, particularly in the second half. Team-mate Jonny Evans was voted man of the match, while Victor Lindelof and Diogo Dalot also put in reliable displays.

It was a match that was settled in the final minutes of the first half, when Evans’ long-range pass into Bruno Fernandes was spectacularly volleyed home by the latter. It was a rare moment of attacking quality in another underwhelming offensive display from Ten Hag’s side.

The three points ends United’s losing streak in away fixtures this season - with the Red Devils suffering defeats at Tottenham, Arsenal and Bayern Munich. It was also United’s third win of the Premier League season, moving them up to eighth in the table.

Ten Hag will hope Reguilon is not absent for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup fixture against Crystal Palace. Injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia mean the Spaniard is the only available senior left-back.

Shaw and Malacia were among seven players who missed Saturday’s trip to Burnley, along with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad. Jadon Sancho and Antony were also not available for non-footballing reasons.
