Could this Manchester United star be facing the axe already?

Manchester United's early exit from the Champions League has led to a domino effect of discussions over some players' future at the club.

The Red Devils faced Bayern Munich in their final group stage match of Europe's most elite competition. Their slim 1-0 loss saw them rooted to the bottom of the table with just four points on the board after one win, one draw and four defeats.

Incoming new investor Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly 'been critical of a number of big-money United signings who have failed to deliver upon their initial promise'. Among these names is André Onana, according to reports in Spain (via TEAMtalk).

United brought Onana to Old Trafford during the summer for a fee of £47.2 million. He was viewed as the ideal man to step up as the team's No.1 and replace long-serving star David de Gea, who departed after an iconic 12 years with the club.

Onana conceded 15 goals in United's six Champions League fixtures and Ratcliffe has 'seen enough' and already wants the club to explore new options to bring in. The British billionaire is looking for a 'top-class upgrade at the first available opportunity' and there is already a potential target on the radar.

Valencia's Giorgi Mamardashvili is reportedly the 'top choice' on the radar and a bid of €40 million (£34.3m) is being put together to snap him up. United do face competition from Chelsea for the towering 6 foot 6 shot-stopper and Valencia need to balance their own books.

It is unclear whether United will act immediately and enter talks during the January transfer window, but the report claims Ratcliffe wants to make a move by next summer at the latest. Mauricio Pochettino has his eyes on Mamardashvili as he is looking to restructure the spine of his new team as they too continue to struggle.

United boss Erik ten Hag has consistently defended Onana this season, with the goalkeeper coming under fire for some of the errors he has made in games. Speaking earlier this month, Ten Hag said: "If you analyse it well then you see he is the second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League based on stats, so his expected defending goals is the second best in the Premier League," Ten Hag said. He's doing well. Also he knows that in the Champions League he makes some mistakes but all over you see the first five months he is doing particularly well."
