The striker faced his brother on Tuesday as Manchester United beat Copenhagen in the Champions League.

Rasmus Hojlund is confident he will only get better at Manchester United, that’s despite his impressive start to life at Old Trafford.

The striker has netted three in three Champions League appearances for the Red Devils and, while failing to net in the Premier League so far, he has put in several encouraging performances. Hojlund’s speed, pressing, movement off the ball and physical strength have given United fans plenty of reason for optimism, and the Dane admits he has already formed a ‘special bond’ with the supporters.

That’s despite United struggling in the opening months of the season, and Hojlund’s debut for the club against Arsenal at the beginning of September marked the first match in a run of five defeats from seven.

Not that Hojlund has shouldered any of the blame for that sequence, but the 20-year-old admits that his team-mates are still adapting to his style of play. “It has been alright,” Hojlund said on Tuesday, when asked about his start at United.

“I’ve tried my best every time I play, and I still need to find the rhythm. We have been struggling a little bit, but we are getting there now. We have had three wins in a row, so that is very positive.

“For sure [I’m getting used to the Premier League]. I improve every day and my team-mates are starting to see my patterns in the game as well, so it is getting better and better every day.”

Hojlund arrived in the summer from Atalanta, in a transfer that could be worth up to £72m. It was a colossal fee for a player who made his senior debut just three years ago, while this time 12 months ago, he had scored just one goal in Europe’s top five leagues.

But Hojlund said the lofty fee doesn’t bother him. “I know my worth,” he explained. “I know I have to perform every day because I play for Manchester United.

“In the end, I am only 20 years old and I am not the finished article yet. I still have a lot to improve and I am getting there slowly. I reckon I have had a fine start to the season and now we have to keep building and the goals will come in the Premier League.”

The attacker was speaking after United’s 1-0 Champions League win over Copenhagen, his former side. It was a particularly memorable night for Hojlund, with his brother, Oscar, coming on in the latter stages for the Danish champions.

“It is a great feeling being on the same pitch as my brother, and not only in a normal stadium,” he said. “In Denmark it [Old Trafford] is one of the most special stadiums in the world, so it is a special feeling.”

Harry Maguire’s second-half header on Tuesday handed United a first win in this season’s Champions League, although Erik ten Hag’s side had to rely on Andre Onana’s injury-time penalty save from Jordan Larsson to hold onto three points. The win means United trail second-place Galatasaray by just a point at the halfway point in the group.
