Raphael Varane has thanked Manchester United fans for their support after it was confirmed he would leave the club for free at the end of the season.

The French defender will become a free agent in the summer transfer window after United opted against triggering the option of an additional year in his contract.

Varane, 31, was a fan favourite during his time at Old Trafford, but despite clearly being a world-class player, injury issues scuppered his playing time. He has made 93 appearances in his three seasons at the club after signing from Real Madrid for £42 million and missed 47 matches because of 11 instances of injury or illness during that period of time.

Taking to social media after his exit was confirmed on Tuesday morning, the World Cup winner said: “To you guys, supporters of Manchester United, it's been an amazing few years, to play for this special club and wear that shirt.”

“The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Man United player was insane. The atmosphere was amazing. I feel in love with the club, with the fans. You have to play for Man United to understand what that represents.

"For my kids, it's home here. It is going to be a special place for me for life. When the fans go to Wembley it's something they remember for life. To share that moment with them [winning the Carabao Cup last season] was absolutely amazing.

"Despite the fact we have had a difficult season, I am very positive for the future. The new owners are coming with a clear plan and a great strategy. I will see you at Old Trafford to say goodbye in the last home game this season. And it's going to be a very emotional day for me, for sure.”
