That was the Red Devils’ sixth official match ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, although there was at least one behind-closed-doors friendly that is known about.
From those six fixtures, United won the opening three matches, but failed to emerge victorious from the final triple header, drawing twice and losing to Atletico Madrid on Saturday.
In total, 34 players represented the Red Devils this summer, including new recruits Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen.
There were also several players whose pre-seasons were impacted by injury and illness, including Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, James Garner and Jadon Sancho.
But the six matches gave us a good indication of what Ten Hag feels is his strongest XI ahead of the season, especially after naming an almost first-choice team in Olso against Atleti.
While the Dutchman will want to pick what he feels is his best team for Sunday’s season opener against Brighton & Hove Albion, fitness will play a big factor in his selection, and those who featured most in pre-season have a better chance of starting against Graham Potter’s men.
That means Martinez and Eriksen are unlikely to start, while the 45 minutes Cristiano Ronaldo got in the tank on Sunday will not be sufficient for a starting berth when the Seagulls head to Old Trafford.
So we’ve had a look at the numbers to see which Red Devils played the most minutes in organised pre-season games this summer, and are more likely to start this weekend…
