It looks set to be a busy summer of transfer activity at Manchester United, with the Red Devils reportedly interested in bringing in new additions from Premier League rivals.
The likes of Harry Kane, Declan Rice, John McGinn and Kalvin Phillips have been mooted as stars Erik ten Hag could look to lure to Old Trafford, in addition to overseas players who have been linked with a move.
But should United sign players from a Premier League club, it would continue a long tradition of recruiting a new player and simultaneously weakening a rival.
There are no shortage of examples, and some of the Red Devils’ greatest players over the last 30 years have been lured from a fellow Premier League side.
So we’re counting down the 21 best signings United have made from clubs in the division.
This list obviously excludes players signed from abroad, or prior to 1992 when the Premier League was formed. Players bought from English clubs not playing in the top flight also don’t count, nor do academy signings.
1. 21. Henning Berg
Became the first player to win the Premier League with different clubs when he picked up the title with United in 1999, having done so before at Ewood Park four years prior. Berg also played a significant role in the treble campaign, although was largely back-up behind Jaap Stam and Ronny Johnsen.
2. 20. Alan Smith
Joined from recently relegated Leeds United in 2004, so just about makes the list. Smith spent three years at Old Trafford and played 93 times, while winning a single league title in 2007, before joining Newcastle United.
3. 19. Chris Smalling
A player who spent nine years at United and played in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final title-winning side, the defender joined from Fulham in 2010. Smalling enjoyed a penchant for scoring against Manchester City and currently plays for Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
4. 18. Juan Mata
The Spaniard was one of the first signings of the post-Ferguson era and looks set to leave the club this summer. The midfielder made 285 appearances, scoring 51 goals, including that memorable double at Anfield in 201
