Ralf Rangnick’s Donny van de Beek comments suggest he has a future at Manchester United

Donny van de Beek sealed a deadline day loan move to Everton from Manchester United for the remainder of the season.

The Dutchman arrived at the Red Devils from Ajax for an initial £35m, with £5m of add-ons in August 2020 and has struggled for game-time since then.

Van de Beek failed to start a Premier League game under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Ralf Rangnick this campaign and pushed for a move before the winter window came to a close.

The move to the Toffees could work in the midfielder’s favour, by gaining much needed minutes before a summer return to Old Trafford.

What the future could hold

Rangnick has recently indicated van de Beek has a future at United, suggesting the Dutchman would get game-time under him this campaign, if he continues to ‘work hard’.

The German said the following when asked what van de Beek needs to do to get into the club’s starting XI.

“Just work hard,” Rangnick said. “So far, as I have got to know him, he has got a top mentality.

"He works hard in every training session. He is a team player through and through. There will be games where he will get his chance to play, I am sure.

"I also had a long conversation with him last week about that and again, of course it is difficult for him right now because he also wants to play for the Dutch national team, he wants to qualify for himself and play in the World Cup in Qatar.

"In order to do that he needs to get game time here. But I still believe we should keep him, and he should stay here, definitely until the end of this season and try to get as much game time as he possibly can.”

Van de Beek’s stance

It’s interesting to note that these comments suggest Rangnick would’ve liked to keep the 24-year-old in his squad until at least the end of the season, but that of course wasn’t a shared sentiment by the player himself.

Van de Beek made 50 appearances for the Red Devils before his temporary switch to Merseyside, with minimal minutes in his last four Premier League outings.
