Ralf Rangnick has confirmed five Manchester United players will miss Saturday’s Premier League game against Norwich City due to injury.

But there’s more bad news for the Red Devils with Rangnick admitting in Friday’s pre-match press conference that Luke Shaw may not feature again for United this season.

The England defender had to be replaced in the 1-1 draw with Leicester City two weeks ago, and Rangnick has subsequently revealed Shaw would require surgery to remove bolts in his leg that were fitted in 2015 following a double break in a Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven.

But the operation could keep the left-back out for the rest of the season, Rangnick confirmed on Friday.

“Five players will still be missing for tomorrow, and probably the upcoming games. You already mentioned Fred and Scott,” the German replied to a journalist’s question.

“Raphael Varane will also be out. Luke Shaw, who had his bolts and his metal stuff removed from his leg, and Edinson Cavani. Those are the five that will be missing.”

Asked to expand on Shaw’s injury, Rangnick added: “It seems that he will be out for another four weeks, if not five weeks. I think, for him, it will be difficult to be available for any of the seven remaining games.”

As for United’s other absentees, Fred picked up his injury in last week’s defeat at Goodison Park, and McTominay is suffering from a foot problem.

Meanwhile, Varane is out due to ‘muscular problems’, although little information has been given on the extent of the issue, and Cavani is dealing with a calf injury which is expected to keep him out until May.

As for Norwich, their manager Dean Smith also held his pre-match briefing on Friday and had good news regarding Billy Gilmour and Przemyslaw Placheta, both of whom were back in training this week.

However, Saturday’s trip to Old Trafford will come too soon for Josh Sargent, who is set to resume training next week after an ankle injury, while Smith confirmed that Irish defender Andrew Omobamidel will not play again in 2021/22 due to a back problem. On-loan Brandon Williams is also absent as he cannot play against his parent side.
