Will Manchester United cash in this summer?

Manchester United have hit the ground running in their 2023/24 campaign after edging out Wolves in their Premier League opener. Thanks to a big header from Raphaël Varane deep into the second half, the Red Devils banked their first win of the season as they look ahead to compete in another top four battle.

There are still some transfer matters to take care of as well, with the rumour mill still pumping out links and Erik ten Hag also with his list of potential sales. Scott McTominay is one man on the list after struggling for regular game time last season. The midfielder still has two years left on his contract but United are looking to cash in this summer and made their stance clear on a sale last month.

The Reds are said to be looking for about £40 million for McTominay and West Ham have emerged as potential suitors to snap him up as they scour the market for a Declan Rice replacement following his nine-figure move to Arsenal. Football Insider recently reported that if Lucas Paqueta also leaves the club this summer, the Irons will push their pursuit of McTominay.

Former Chelsea and Everton winger Pat Nevin has weighed in on the McTominay exit links and he hopes to see the 26-year-old flourish beyond Old Trafford moving forward.

“Any club in England should look to grab McTominay. Man United are not getting the best out of him, and he is a fantastic player,” the ex-Scotland international told Sporting Post.

McTominay was a regular for the Reds prior to last season and former manager Ole GunnarSolskjaer rated him highly during his time at the hilt. The Norwegian praised the midfielder’s work ethic back in 2020 and described him as a “physical monster” who “can do everything” thanks to his experience operating as a striker before his shift into the engine room.
